Why Does Radon Need to Be Vented into the Air Above My Home's Roof?

Several types of radon mitigation systems exist, but they all have the same basic function: pulling radon gas out of your home interior and venting it into the air. In most radon mitigation systems, radon is discharged through an opening in the roof.

There are three main reasons that radon needs to be vented into the air above your Twin Cities area home:

1. Dilution

Radon gas is only dangerous when it builds up in enclosed spaces and is breathed in over time. Above your roof, the gas is released into open air where it dilutes almost instantly and drops to normal background levels. Once it’s highly diluted outdoors, radon is harmless.

2. Safety

If radon gas were vented near the ground – especially near windows – or under eaves, the radon could easily be pulled right back into the house. Venting radon above the roof prevents re-entry into your home. For this reason, most building codes, and EPA and ANSI standards, specifically require that radon mitigation systems vent above the roof and a set distance from openings.

3. Pressure Control

Radon mitigation systems work by creating a lower pressure under your foundation than inside your home, causing radon gas to be sucked out of the soil and discharged into the atmosphere. Venting up through the roof helps the system’s fan avoid short-circuiting airflow back toward the building and keeps the system stable during inclement weather. This is crucial in the cold winter climate of the Twin Cities, where the winter stack effect can pull radon gas back inside if it isn’t vented high enough.
